The wedding garter has quite a specific history and background. Traditionally a bride used to wear a garter to her wedding and this would be removed by the groom and/or all the groomsmen towards the end of the wedding reception. To remove an item of the bride’s clothing used to be seen as good luck. Nowadays, only the groom removes the bride’s garter and tosses it to the unmarried men at the reception. This is normally done after the bouquet toss.
Not all brides and grooms do the garter removal/toss, but most brides like to wear a garter to their wedding. There are many wedding garters out on the market, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for within your budget, then why not make your down DIY Wedding Garter?
In this DIY guide, we make a something blue feather wedding garter, taking inspiration from the recent Hollywood film version of the novel, The Great Gatsby: a stunning visual representation of 1920s vintage fashions and styles. It cost us very little to make this Wedding Garter, so going DIY can be extremely economical and helps to keep your budget down.
1. Some lace/crochet lace in your chosen colour.
2. A pair of scissors.
3. A tape measure.
4. Some feathers in your chosen colours.
5. Needle and thread (to match the lace).
Step 1. Take your tape measure and wrap it around your thigh (where you would want to wear your garter). Note down how many inches your thigh measures.
Step 2. Measure out the number of inches you noted down for your thigh against your lace/crochet lace. Add on another inch or so and then cut the lace.
Step 3. Bring the two ends of your lace together, lap them over one another and hold them together. Once this comes together you will have your basic garter.
Step 4. Take your needle and thread and sew the two ends together.
Step 5. We are using three feathers: one bigger one and two smaller ones but feel free to get creative with the size, number and colour of your feathers. Take your first feather and hold it against the overlap section of your garter that you just sewed together and start sewing it to the garter.
Step 6. Add your remaining feathers and continue to sew and secure them to the garter
Step 7. Finish up the sewing and secure the whole lot by tying up your thread on the back.
Step 8. You’ve finished your very simple DIY feather wedding garter, inspired from The Great Gatsby’s vintage 1920s style.
This is a very simple, easy and cheap DIY Wedding Garter. You can go ahead and add on anything you might come across. Buttons, brooches, felt flowers are all good examples of unique and inexpensive touches you can add to your wedding garter. Pinterest is a fantastic place to get some inspiration! Happy Garter Making!
