Giving Notice of Marriage: What to Expect

Giving notice of marriage is a legality (i.e. it has to be done if you want to get married). You cannot get married (in a religious or civil ceremony) without first giving notice at your local registry office. Giving notice of¬†marriage¬†is essentially a public announcement of your intent to get married. Your local register office, takes down several details from you and your fiance, and then they are legally required to display your notice either on a notice board or in a book. Historically, this would allow anyone who had any objections to the impending marriage to speak up. Of…

Giving Notice of Marriage – 30/08/2013

Today we had to give notice of marriage and that makes things feel real! In Oxfordshire, the council cannot guarantee/confirm the registrar unless we have given notice of our intent to marry. You have to give notice at least 2 weeks before you plan to get married, so 9 months ahead of time did seem a bit early to us, but we wanted to get our registrar confirmed so we were happy to go and get it out of the way. After reading various bits and pieces about this on wedding forums, we were a little nervous. We knew we…

DIY Beer Bottle Vases

DIY Beer Bottle Vases

Seeing small, green beer bottles piling up in the recycling box has given me an idea for using them instead of taking them down to the bottle bank. Without the labels, these 330ml Stella Artois bottles are actually really works of art in their own right. Their shape, colour and size make for beautiful little decorative items and they’re so easy to collect! *Supplies Needed*: – As many used bottles as needed. – Washing up liquid. – A sink full of warm water.   *How to*: 1. Fill up your kitchen sink (or a pot) with warm water. 2. Mix…

Wedding Ceremony Venue booked! – 15/08/2013

Wedding Ceremony Venue booked! – 15/08/2013

Fast forward one week and we had a weekend away, followed by a couple of days off to sort out the wedding ceremony venue and it’s now all booked! After much of searching online and emailing around for potential wedding ceremony venues in Central Oxford, we decided to go and see the historic Oxford Town Hall. I had already looked at their information when searching for a reception venue, but found it rather pricey for the whole event. After looking at other venues though, their room hire for the ceremony only didn’t look too bad at all. The building was…

Wedding Ceremony Required – 08/08/2013

So the reception venue has been booked, but unless we actually get married, then there really isn’t much point in planning the reception is there? This means that we need to come up with some sort of plan for the wedding ceremony. Our wedding reception venue is more or less in the centre of Oxford, so it would be good if we had our wedding ceremony somewhere fairly nearby. Although we were still torn between having a very small and intimate ceremony and between inviting ‘everyone’, we still needed a plan. Most likely we will be just using the registry…

Reception Venue Booked! – 03/08/2013

Reception Venue Booked! – 03/08/2013

We are starting to think outside the box now and have been looking at other wedding venue options. We have still been sticking to our plan of having the ceremony in a registry office and then having an evening-only reception somewhere nearby. The other thought that we are having is that since we live so near to Oxford and several of our guests will be coming over for the wedding from abroad, then we should do something to showcase Oxford and really make them feel like they have visited the historic and beautiful city. With our more creative thinking, we…

Wedding invitation samples – 25/07/2013

Wedding invitation samples – 25/07/2013

Even though we don’t yet have a ceremony venue, a reception venue or even a plan really, I have been looking at wedding invitations. I couldn’t help it! The Internet is there, beckoning me to start looking at wedding-related prettiness! Most wedding invitation websites do offer to send you a few free samples, so I wanted to take full advantage of this and started looking around early on. It’s also good to bear in mind that most of these companies do then follow up after you order samples, with discount codes and other offers to encourage you to buy invitations…

Closer to the goal – 14/07/2013

Closer to the goal – 14/07/2013

Groom and I had a nice long chat about our wedding last weekend and we are getting closer to the goal, believe it or not! After some lengthy discussions we agreed that we would prefer a very low key and small ceremony with only immediate family members in a registry office. We could then follow that with a small dinner with our families and we would then have a separate party for our friends to come along to and drink themselves silly. We thought that keeping family and friends apart might make everything a bit easier to manage. So with…

Wedding Rut – 01/07/2013

I can’t believe it is July already. We got engaged back at the very end of March. It is now July and we are no clearer on our wedding than before we even got engaged. I think we are in some kind of wedding rut. Communication with Groom about the wedding seems to have slowed right down. I think being the centre of attention is Groom’s worst nightmare so avoiding planning the wedding seems to be his coping mechanism. Things seem to have got particularly bad since I basically ruled out having the wedding abroad. I think we’re going to…

Wedding Disagreement – 23/06/2013

Wedding Disagreement – 23/06/2013

Wedding disagreement is no stranger to any wedding planning. I have no doubt that it creeps into even the most in-tune of couples. It is what makes a wedding happen in the end, because without wedding disagreement, certain decisions would not be made and so the wedding doesn’t end up being the day that is becomes. I’m still in Cyprus and enjoying the endless sunshine, the heat that sears through anything that’s put in its path. One of my younger sisters has graduated from secondary school and we all went to her graduation ceremony and then to the dinner afterwards.…
